Programs

Established in 1984 by a group of persons in recovery, New Life Home for Recovering Women was created to provide residential, substance abuse treatment to women, many of whom are homeless. Originally located in Highland Park, the agency moved to its current location in northeast Detroit in 1994. Since 1986, New Life Home has provided services to almost 1,000 chemically addicted women; 50% of who have remained clean and sober. Today we are the largest facility of our kind in Detroit.

New Life Home for Recovering Women provides single women who are chemically addicted with long-term (up to 1 year) residential, substance abuse treatment services. New Life Home has the capacity to serve 27 women at one time in this program. New Life Home for Recovering Women has been accredited by CARF since 1995 and licensed by the State of Michigan since 1986. All counselors, at a minimum, have a Certified Addictions Counselor I.

New Life Home for Recovering Women considers addiction as a treatable disease. For some, however, success is only achieved through long-term treatment. Based upon individual needs and goals, New Life Home provides a therapeutic living environment through the provision of case management, counseling, group therapy, and food and housing for up to one year. Following the completion of residential treatment, all clients are provided assistance with permanent housing placement and after-care services. Other services include family counseling, parenting classes, health awareness through Hutzel Hospital, recreation, relapse prevention training, and referrals for employment, mental health services, legal services, and educational programs.

New Life Home for Recovering Women values the contributions that AA and NA can make in each person's recovery process. Meetings are held on-site three times a week. Clients are encouraged to attend outside meetings once they earn the privilege to leave the building. Recognizing that the families of addicts have the potential to effect and enable continued use, New Life Home for Recovering Women actively involves each client's family and significant others in the recovery process. We also work closely with Protective Services to assist our clients with reunifying with their children.

New Life Home has a transitional housing program for women who are in recovery and who do not have children. The primary referral source for this project is our residential treatment program. The goal of the program is to provide a semi-structured environment where women in recovery can reintegrate back into mainstream society, while being supported in a therapeutic community. All participants receive case management, assistance with permanent housing placement, life skills training, relapse prevention counseling, group and individual therapy, referrals, family interventions, and peer support and monitoring through the Residents Council. All participants must be willing to pay for services, working or receiving entitlements, to follow program rules, and maintain sobriety.

Referrals for our program come from a variety of sources including detoxification programs, the City of Detroit Bureau of Substance Abuse, and the Detroit Homeless Continuum of Care. Funding sources include the City of Detroit Bureau of Substance Abuse and Planning and Development Departments, the Michigan Housing Trust Fund, and the Michigan Department of Community Health. We also receive Medicaid reimbursements. We are active members of the Detroit Wayne County Homeless Action Network, the Michigan Non-Profit Association, the Community Resource Association Center, and the Michigan Transitional Housing Coalition.

The Internal Revenue Service has granted New Life Home an exemption from federal income taxes as a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
